Unruly Tourists.
A Tale of Perception and Conflict.
New Zealand Opera brings to life a provocative narrative based on real events, centering around Irish tourists whose holiday misadventures in New Zealand caused public outrage. Their disruptive actions offended the local community, with their behavior broadcasted and widely condemned. However, the story challenges this surface-level judgment, exploring whether the locals’ reaction was too harsh and asking, “Who was truly unruly?” The task was to create a visually compelling platform that tells the story of the Unruly Tourists while offering a balanced depiction of the conflict from both perspectives.
The results.
We used quotes from both sides of the conflict to provide a grounded and multi-faceted view of the story. The design centered around bold, dynamic typography, featured prominently on street posters. This approach not only captured attention but also emphasized the emotional complexity of the narrative. By balancing both perspectives, the visual storytelling invited audiences to reconsider their initial judgments, encouraging them to engage with the deeper themes of misunderstanding and conflict.
This execution reflects New Zealand Opera’s ongoing commitment to exploring layered human experiences, using bold design to amplify contemporary stories.
